Team Building Experience – Competitive Sail Handling and Race

The Schooner Pride makes a great venue to bring your colleagues, business partners or clients for an exhilarating, yet relaxing experience on Charleston Harbor. The Pride provides the perfect setting to show off our amazing city and waterways! The following is an example of a great team building format, where you can get interactive with your sailing experience and learn what we’re all about!

Objective: Following an introduction to Schooner operations and sailing techniques, groups will be established to do a timed competitive activity that will award points (both + &-) for using proper sailing techniques, steering and a sail between government marks in the harbor., assisted by a crew member.

The Captain and mates will initially demonstrate raising and setting the sails, steering and securing the sails.
The “Team leader” of each team will be assigned to steer the boat under the watchful eye of the Pride’s Captain during the competitive sequence.
The “Grand Prix” format race start will be used. This means it will begin with all sails down, the team will raise and set sails, then steer to the finish point observing” rules of the road” and navigation buoy’s.
The race will be between the government marks designated by the Captain of the Pride and timed to see which team is the fastest and performs in the other four categories.

The Captain of the Pride will establish point values as suggested below and is the final arbitrator. He will award points to each team as follows:

2. Securing the sails after each race	20
3. Steering to a proper course	20
4. Tacking and jibing	20
5. Time to finish	20
Total Possible	100

Emphasis on will be on teamwork, communications with other team members/ team leader, and following safe and proper procedures. Points may be deducted for not following the instructions, safe procedures, methods of operation or Schooner Pride Captain/Mates directions.
